The Power Grid: augmented reality is used in the maintenance of reclosers used in the power grid, to help ensure a better electricity supply.

It has now become possible to rely on technologies that bring intelligence, time optimization, cost reduction and increased business productivity to ensure a better delivery to the consumer. This is why Atlantico has developed a research and development project for Companhia Paranaense de Energia (Copel). Copel is a Brazilian electric utility company that is responsible for bringing electricity directly to 4,515,938 consumer units in 394 municipalities and 1,113 localities (districts, towns and villages) in Paraná. Atlântico has been working with Copel since 2019.

The greatest challenge for Copel was the turnover of the first call maintenance employees combined with the variety of recloser models being used. Each one of these units has its own particularities, which results in a greater difficulty for electricians to understand the workings of the units during maintenance and operation. This in turn means a specialists needs to be called out for a 2nd service. With this in mind, Atlantico started creating a solution using augmented reality technologies, 3D modeling, artificial intelligence and voice commands, all through the use of smartglasses. This solution offers field technicians who are operating and maintaining the distributor’s equipment, a unique and easy to handle solution that we have called Copelia.

Copel’s “Augmented Reality Applied to Effective Operation and Maintenance” project was designed based on the following objectives:

– Implement automatic detection of recloser models through Artificial Intelligence;

– Offer real-time video calling directly through the smartglasses between the field technician and a remote specialist;

– Provide a model of recloser units in 3D and Augmented Reality;

– Implement the application with auditory feedback and voice commands;

– Provide viewing of manuals;

– Provide the visualization of maintenance procedures with checklists on the smart device using augmented reality;

– Make the viewing of infield-generated photos available on the Google Drive storage service.

After developing the Copelia software and applying a survey to users, the advantages of this system and results achieved are as follows:

– The use of smartglasses in the maintenance of reclosers to help technicians in the field;

– Allow a clear and reliable training and qualification environment for the procedures through augmented and virtual reality resources;

– Quick query for a variety of operations;

– Reduction of operation costs.

In addition to the direct results, the solution developed by Atlantico on behalf of Copel was also recognized in two articles that were published in COMPSAC 2021 and also in an article in AH2021. In addition, it was the subject of a lecture at TDC 2021, will also soon be included in CETECMAN 2021 and was even nominated for the Cier Innovation Award 2021.
